An oil on Masonite painting of a red roofed mill with the mill pond in the foreground and a barn against a hill in the distance. Painted in an unusual palette that includes lavender. I have been unable to find a listing for the artist. In a new frame. 10 by 12 inches, with frame 12.5 by 14.5 inches.

Condition: excellent.

Though it is difficult to date, I suspect it is from the middle of the 20th century and most likely to be American.

Oil on artist board of waves breaking on a rocky coast titled on the back in pencil, “Surf at Loblolly Cove.” Stanley Woodward, American (1890-1970), was a well-known Rockport Massachusetts artist. Also on the back is written in pencil, “FOR 1949 EXHIB.” The frame has printed on the lower edge words about copyright by Woodward so the silver gilt frame and narrow painted liner are original to the painting. Unsigned oil on paper laid on cardboard depicting the harbor with people in the foreground, the buildings on the right and the breakwater in the middle ground and the harbor with a ship and the far arm of land in the distance. Scenes of Naples painted either in gouche or oil were done throughout the 19th century with views of Vesuvius erupting being particularly popular. A well executed watercolor and gouache on paper titled on the back, with an indecipherable monogram and the date in the lower left. Excellent color and good perspective it was probably done by a professional artist, if only I could read the monogram. London framers label on the back of the back board. Image 24 by 18 ¾ inches.

Condition; good, though the mat pulled a little of the color in the upper right. It is laid down on cardboard. SOLD

Jeanie Lea Southwick, American 1853-? was in Japan in 1915 for the coronation where she won a prize for her work. A well-drawn watercolor titled in the lower right, “At the Shoguns Tomb Shiba” (Shiba park is in Tokyo). Signed in the same place Jeanie Lea Southwick. Watercolor over traces of pencil and a little gouache for the blue of the sky in the distance. Sight size 8 7/8 by 6 ¾ inches. Frame 14 by 11 ¾ inches.

A large well executed watercolor by Richard Zoellner, American (1908-2003) of a farm and small village with a church steeple on a bleak winter day. Titled on the back of the watercolor, “Day in January.” Sight size 13 1/2 by 20 inches.

Condition; excellent in gold frame. Minor damage to the frame. Sold

A well painted oil on board landscape of green fields in the foreground and a tan one in the distance with a group of trees on the left under a cloudy blue sky. The frame is a molded gilt frame. It is a good size; 19 inches tall by 21 ½ inches wide. With frame it is 26 ½ inches by 24 inches.

Condition is excellent with a recent cleaning and new frame.

According to the Brooklyn Museum, which owns one of his watercolors, his dates are 1880-1940. He was a New England artist (Falk lists him with a Worcester MA address) with some of his paintings both signed and located. This large watercolor is attached to a stiff cardboard. This large painting depicts two leaning palm trees just above a beach with two high tide lines of debris, curling waves and seagulls all under a sunny but partially cloudy sky. Signed, “A. A drawing with ink, pencil, watercolor and gouache on laid paper depicting a harbor scene very much in the manner of the French artist Claude Vernet (1714-1789). Perhaps there is a print source for this drawing. The work is signed in the lower right, “Tho. Ryves. 1770.” The most likely artist is either the father Thomas Ryves (1721-1788) or his son Thomas (born 1753) from the distinguished Dorset, England family. The drawing is 10 5/8 x 16 inches (27 x 40.5 cm).
