Giovanni Oppido (1907-1988) is a well documented Brazilian artist. The painting is 23 x 46 ¼ inches (58.4 x 117.5 cm) with frame 27 ½ x 50 inches (69.8 x 127 cm)...

Alfred Hair (American, 1941-1970) was an early Florida Highwaymen painter. This large painting depicts two leaning palm trees just above a beach with two high tide lines of debris, curling waves and seagulls all under a sunny but partially cloudy sky. Signed, “A. Hair” lower left. The painting is 24 ¼ x 36 ¼ inches. The apparently original frame is 29 ½ x 41 ½ inches. Painted on panel (Upson board).

Costigan, John Edward American (1888-1972) large watercolor of a brook surrounded by trees some turning red and orange with the season. Watercolor and gouache on textured paper. Signed lower right, “J.E. Costigan N.A.” On the back in the upper left in pencil, “Brook- Autumn/ by John E. Costigan N.A.” and in the upper right, “Orangeburg N.Y.” Size, 20 7/8 by 25 7/8 inches.

Excellent condition in a good frame with linen liner...

An oil on Masonite painting of a red roofed mill with the mill pond in the foreground and a barn against a hill in the distance. Painted in an unusual palette that includes lavender. I have been unable to find a listing for the artist. In a new frame. 10 by 12 inches, with frame 12.5 by 14.5 inches.

Condition: excellent.

Though it is difficult to date, I suspect it is from the middle of the 20th century and most likely to be American.

Oil on canvas by Fred Pye (American, 1882-1964) of a wave crashing onto a rocky shore with whitecaps further offshore and a sunny but partly cloudy sky; in an elaborate white painted and gilt frame. Born in Iowa, studied in Paris Pye later lived in Cincinnati and painted in Maine. 26 x 36 inches (66 x 91 cm). Frame 32 ½ x 42 ½ inches (82,5 x 108 cm). Signed lower right in red Fred Pye. Based on the sticker on the back he was a member of The American Professional Artists League...

A pastel of the river Seine in Paris with the top of a building in the distance over leafy trees and a barge passing through the arch of a bridge by the American born Louis Orr who spent much of his life in Paris. This in a nice example of his work in a new mat and frame. Sight size of pastel 12 by 16 inches (30 by 40 cm) frame size 19 3/8 by 23 3/8 inches (49 by 59 cm).

Condition: Excellent with acid free mat and backing.

An unsigned watercolor on heavy textured white drawing paper of corn ricks and pumpkins on a gentle slope with blue sky above and hills in the distance. It is well executed with the focus carried to the rick in the front by the use of details there and looser painting in other parts of the watercolor. The bowl done on the backside of the page also shows the artists quality. The bowl seems to clearly indicate that the work was done in the earlier part of the 20th century...

Also on the back is written in pencil, “FOR 1949 EXHIB.” The frame has printed on the lower edge words about copyright by Woodward so the silver gilt frame and narrow painted liner are original to the painting. A nice watercolor portrait of a young man, probably in his mid-teens, signed, “Elinor M. Barnard/1933.” The young man with brown hair and eyes wearing an open necked white shirt leans into the picture plane with a sense of youthful eagerness. Elinor Barnard (1872-1942) was born and studied in the UK, but worked mostly in the USA, principally New York City. She has a relaxed and economical style. Sight size 16 3/8 by 12 ¼ inches. A watercolor on artist paper depicting from street level through leaves and trees soaring buildings behind a high wall with a 19th century brownstone to one side. I can’t identify the place, though the brownstone is vaguely similar to the Villard Houses. James Penney (American 1910-1982) was a painter in oils, watercolor and a muralist with numerous exhibition records and works in museums and public buildings. He also taught art. He attended the Art Students League in New York in the 1930’s...

A well executed watercolor and gouache on paper titled on the back, with an indecipherable monogram and the date in the lower left. Excellent color and good perspective it was probably done by a professional artist, if only I could read the monogram. London framers label on the back of the back board. Image 24 by 18 ¾ inches.

Condition; good, though the mat pulled a little of the color in the upper right. It is laid down on cardboard. SOLD

A large oil on canvas by Henry Charles Lee (American, 1864-1930) titled on the stretcher, “Winter Landscape” and signed lower left “Henry C. Lee.” He lived in Cornwall New York and in France, where he died. The stretcher had an old label for a French artist supplies dealer Lucien LeFevre-Foinet with the number 7350.

Andrew Thomas Schwartz (American, 1867-1942) oil on canvas of a hilly landscape with the morning mist rising off the more distant hills. A few evergreens, probably cedars, sit in the field that appears to be tan with autumn. The only sign of habitation is a low stone wall. A very similar painting though slightly larger was sold at Doyle in New York in 2006 titled, “Clearing, Morning, Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia” and dated 1912. Condition is excellent with a recent cleaning and new frame.

An oil on canvas in a naive style of a line of deer walking along a gentle hill toward the top of a larger hill with the sunset and distant view of the other side of the valley. The painting was found in Shenandoah Valley though no record of, “A. Taylor” has been found. The tone of the painting is warm.
