The scene of flowering plants and a Chinese fence covers the face of the plate, from the rim on one side, across the center and onto the opposite rim. An interesting blue and white hand pained porcelain plate of two scholars(?) greeting each other and a boy carrying a load in front of water with a rising moon in the far distance. There is an elaborate border including scholar’s roles on the side of the well between the rim and the center and at the outside of the rim leaf and flower border. I suspect that there is a very good version of this scene that was the model for this quickly done one that has a kind of folk art charm...

A underglaze blue hand painted blue and white export plate depicting three sprigs of flowers enclosed in a lobed border with fleur- de-lis and on the outer border a loosely painted fence. The outer edge is painted brown. Given the vague Western references in the decoration the plate is probably after 1750. 8 7/8th inches (22.5 cm) diameter.

A medium size porcelain bowl with a lattice impressed border at the top and blue hand painted flowers. On the underside are the three waves and the number two, both hand painted in underglaze blue. Additionally there is a hand incised three in the body. This piece must have been early to have escaped the factory with the fairly dramatic warping that must have occurred during firing. The rim feels unglazed, so it may have had a cover...

A print titled, “LE DEPART D’UNE FIORE” on heavy paper with the colors brown blue red/pink and black on white paper. Sometimes I find it difficult to determine if the colors have been applied to a single plate or if the print has been made with a separate plate for each color. This print feels as if it was printed with more than one plate because of the mixing of colors in some places and the clean separation in others. Bonnet was an early printer using separate plates, which is the more t...

An oil on canvas in a naive style of a line of deer walking along a gentle hill toward the top of a larger hill with the sunset and distant view of the other side of the valley. The painting was found in Shenandoah Valley though no record of, “A. Taylor” has been found. The tone of the painting is warm. While there are no give away clues as to the age between the late 19th or the early 20th century, it has a feel of being in the earlier part of that range rather than the later. It is 14 by 2...

A very well made and unusual cradle with supports for hanging. The design elements suggest a big city cabinet maker, the classical Greek key and lyre, the Gothic piercing at the top and the Japanese design influence on the supports would be from a cabinetmaker in a major city. The details like the brass or bronze heads on the screws holing the frame together at the base and the four reverse painted glass panels (eglomise) of red birds certainly indicate that highly skilled workers were available...

The image is almost certainly a tinted salt print mounted between two pieces of glass and matted to appear similar to a daguerreotype. Most of the original paper seal is still on the glass, but where it is missing the edge of a piece of paper is visible between the pieces of glass. It is translucent when held to a strong light. Overall 6 ¾ inches by 8 ½ inches.

Condition: there are a few light spots under the glass where presumably the paper and the glass are not touching, but otherwise th...

A pair of molded edge porcelain dessert serving bowls, Spode circa 1814 with bat transferred fruit in the center. Pattern number 1686. Neither is marked, but the distinctive border of twined dolphins alternating with a large plant (?) is a Spode design. The pattern of fruits is currently made by Spode and called “Chatham.” The border is set off with a band of gilding at the rim and the inside edge. The bat transfer is an unusual color, almost brown at some angles and gold at others. The di...
