Straight horizontal line hooked rug depicting Labrador in the center and Newfoundland in the upper left with whales, sailboats, seals and steamboats in the ocean as well as a compass rose in the lower left corner.. Aeolus blows from the upper right corner. The variegated black border surrounds the terracotta colored Labrador sitting in a pale blue sea. Details picked out in different colors and the sea shores outlined with brown, lavender and blue. Grenfell started the Grenfell Mission 8888888888. 22 inches high by 18 inches wide.

Condition: stitched to a black cotton cloth mounted on a stretcher. Slight wear around the edges otherwise in very good condition.

The Grenfell Mission Industries, founded by Dr. Wilfred Grenfell, was a point of pride for the people of Labrador and Newfoundland. The women “hookers” worked many hours to make beautiful and creative mats. The sale of the mats contributed to their financial security.
