The monk Budhai, also known as the Laughing Buddha, is an incarnation of the Bodhisattva Maitreya, the Buddha predicted to succeed Gautama Buddha in the future. The rotund deity carved with a broad smiling face seated with his left leg tucked under his ample protruding belly, the right leg drawn up, the shoulders and extremities draped in a wide flowing robe. White hardstone, possibly white jade. Nineteenth century or later. B : 8,6 cm. H : 7,3 cm. Condition : Regarded with the naked eye absolutely perfect, no chips, no lost. Provenance : Old South German collection.
