Late 18th - early 19th century Korean porcelain dish used in ceremonial rites of ancestor worship. The dish is concave so that the ceremonial meat or cake could be placed on it. Simple round shape and foot with slight waist express harmony needed for the ritual. Sand particles adhering to the foot and forming a circle on the dish itself (apparently those dishes were fired in stacks, so the circle is the print of a dish that was fired standing on this one)...

19th century/Meiji period Japanese bronze / brass letter opener with handle depicting two monkeys (one with hand drum and striker, the other raising its arms to a lotus stand) on one side, and gourd on vine with leaves on the other. The blade is engraved with a hawk on a pine tree. Very nice crisp work - see hairwork on one and prunus flowers on the coat of the other, copper patina on their heads, beautiful wear, excellent desk object. Overall length 9 1/2 inches.

18th century smaller size netsuke of a reclining snarling shishi (Buddhist lion), its head turned to the left. Strong early Kyoto school piece with wonderful wear and patina consistent with age. Great fierce face with sharp teeth and small rolling ball inside its mouth. 19th century So school wooden netsuke of 2 South Sea islanders taking a short rest from hauling a huge branch of coral encrusted with barnacles. Excellent detailed carving, fantastic faces with expressions of strained concentration on the task. Encrustations on the coral are inlaid with horn and staghorn, the rope is twisted metal wire. 19th century netsuke of a floor screen with pierced decoration of a dragon in flight among clouds over cresting waves. Carved on both sides, the scaled body of the dragon showing through breaks in the clouds, beautiful light staining, pleasant wear and patina.
