19th century netsuke of a snake coiled around a mother rat while the baby rat tries to escape. Unusual subject, clever composition, wonderful artistic feat of giving animal an anthropomorphic attitude - see the right front paw of the baby raised to its face in distress. Excellent depiction of fur and scales, raised whiskers on mother’s face, eyes of the rodents are inlaid with black horn. Nice patina, himotoshi formed by the “neck” of the snake.
