Rather unusual 19th century Japanese bronze box for use in the incense game, when the player was blindfolded and given an incense to identify. Three cutouts on the top are made in a shape of paulownia crest used by the Tokugawa Shogun family. The paulownia crest was Imperial and represented the Emperor, but it could be bestowed on someone whose service to the throne was most important. Unusual 19th century Japanese mixed metal pendant, its front made as a seated piebald puppy wearing a gilded collar, its front paw raised, and a compass on the back. Copper colored patina, black lacquer spots on its coat, glass top to the compass. 19th century/Meiji period Japanese bronze / brass letter opener with handle depicting two monkeys (one with hand drum and striker, the other raising its arms to a lotus stand) on one side, and gourd on vine with leaves on the other. The blade is engraved with a hawk on a pine tree. Very nice crisp work - see hairwork on one and prunus flowers on the coat of the other, copper patina on their heads, beautiful wear, excellent desk object. Overall length 9 1/2 inches.
