Rather unusual Japanese mixed metal brouch in a shape of a rectangular plaque showing 2 quails in different attitudes among various grasses. The plaque is superimposed by 2 differently shaped fans: one with cranes under a blooming cherry tree, and the other showing a sailing ship in waves on the background of Mount Fuji. 19th century Japanese sword menuki of a walking peasant with two objects - one in his back, the other in his hands, currently mounted as a pin and a pendant. Very clever design, superb detailing - see his face, silver socks, shakudo pants, and the coat inlaid with gold, silver, shakudo and copper squares. The material of the back, the clasp and swinging pendant loop appears to be silver. Height 1 15/16 inches.

Wonderful object made by hammering a chunk of copper, raising it and giving it shape - no casting is involved. Three cutouts on the top are made in a shape of paulownia crest used bu the Tokugawa Shogun family.
