Unusual late 19th century / Meiji period Japanese cloisonne belt buckle decorated with a butterfly and blooming peony flowers with stems and leaves, all on scrolling black background with red border. Wonderful design, extremely well made, beautiful original pitting, gilding to wires and sides (worn), fittings for attaching to a belt on the back. Length 2 3/4 inches.

Original Japanese woodblock print AN IRON CAULDRON IN THE MOONLIT NIGHT by Yoshitoshi printed in 1886. The print is plate 18 in the series 100 Views of the Moon by Taiso Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) and depicts two scoundrels Kofuna no Gengo and Koshi Hanzo trying to break in and steal a huge iron kettle during a full moon. Excellent design, crisply printed, great colors, album backing. Paper size 14 x 9.5 inches

Late 18th to early 19th century Japanese lacquered wood Boddhisattva with his hands in praying attitude, mounted on burlwood plaque. Wonderful beatific face, quiet dignity in its posture, old nicks here and there, overall in great condition for a 200 year old piece. very pleasant patina. Newer burl board with beautiful texture resembling dense swirling clouds, nice metal fitting for hanging. Good devotional or decorative object. Board height 6 7/8 inches, figure height 3.5 inches.

19th century wooden netsuke of a makatsugyo (dragon-fish) on a base. The creature is rarely depicted in netsuke. According to a Chinese legend, a carp that can swim up the waterfall turns into a dragon, and thus serves as a paragon of perseverance, especially in scholarly pursuits. Excellent carving, great depiction of its face, front paws and spine, beautiful patina. Length 1 3/4 inches.

Mid-19th century ivory netsuke depicting a Chinese elder holding a drum and a striker in his hands, and two karako (Chinese boys) clinging to his coat. Excellent carving with wonderful detailed faces (see the teeth of the elder), nice flow to the lines of their robes, great incised textile patterns. Superb patina with fine sheen, beautiful wear. 19th century ivory netsuke of a kanna - a carpenter’s plane. Wonderful carving with great detailing - see the incised wood texture of its body and simulated wear on the rear from mallet strikes. The blade of the plane is made out of horn, beautiful wear, superb patina.
