19th century ivory netsuke of one seated and one standing samurai, the latter holding a boy at his shoulder. All are wearing formal headgear, and most probably the boy represents a young Emperor or a hero. Superbly carved, great faces, elaborate hair and clothing arrangement and excellent textile patterns. 19th century wooden netsuke carved as a temple figure of Kanon (Guanyin in Chinese, the Boddhisattva of Compassion) holding a Precious Jewel in her hands. Carved out of yew wood in a variation of ittobori (one cut) style typical for the Hida school. Crisp detailing, wonderful tranquil face, beautiful flow to her robe, golden lacquer on the Jewel. Unusually well made 19th century porcelain netsuke of Hotei (one of the 7 Gods of Good Luck, also representing Maitreya - the Buddha of the future) with fan in his hand sitting next to his usual bag. Superbly modeled piece with extraordinary face and slight glaze. Wonderful patina, compressed dust in crevices, in excellent condition. Length 1 1/2 inches.

19th century ivory netsuke of a kneeling laborer grinding tea leaves in a mortar with a flattened disc grinder. Excellent carving - see the portrait quality face with a crooked smile and the muscles of his body. Beautiful even material, wonderful patina. Signed MITSUTOSHI (alternative reading is Koju) on the bottom - the artist is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 498, number 1547). Height 1 1/16 inches.

15th century Vietnamese white stoneware covered box with underglaze blue painting on the cover from Hoi An hoard, a historic sunken ship off Cu Lao Cham, central Vietnam. The box was made at Chu Dau in the Red River Delta, and was part of a cargo bound for the South-East Asia (Sumatra, Java or Borneo). The wreck was found in the mid-90's, the ceramics were taken to the surface, and sold by Butterfields in San Francisco. Late Meiji (1890s - 1910s) Japanese beaten copper incense burner - tripod with wide body, flaring mouth and 3 short feet. Wonderful object made by hammering a chunk of copper, raising it and giving it shape - no casting is involved. Fantastic clean gently curving organic form with beautifully hammered surface and superb reddish patina, very pleasant to the touch. Signed JUZAN on the bottom, beautiful object for scholarís desk. Height 2 1/4 inches, diameter 3 7/8 inches at the widest.
