Mid - 19th century Chinese official hat finial denoting 7th civil rank. This type of rank insignia was introduced by the Yongzheng emperor in 1727 for use on ji guan - the semi-formal hat. Different colors denoted different ranks, with gilt bead corresponding to the 7th - see IMPERIAL WARDROBE by Dickinson & Wrigglesworth, p. 108. Rather unusual 19th century Chinese soapstone seal carved on the top with two seated scholar wearing traditional robes, their hands on what appears to be a fisherman’s basket. Excellent carving, beautiful patina and obvious wear attesting to the age of the object. The bottom is carved with four sunken characters in two cartouches and can be translated as HALL FOR CULTIVATION OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, red seal paste in the grooves. 19th century (may be as early as 18th) small Chinese devotional bronze Buddhist figure wearing a monk’s robe and holding a bowl in front of it. Judging by the bowl, the figure represents Bhaiṣajyaguru - a medicinal Buddha. Very nicely mold cast figure of a type used on house altars, beautiful devotional wear, compressed dust in crevices. Height 2 1/8 inches.

Items include a tea bowl (chawan), a water ladle (hishaku), fresh water jar (mizuzashi), a charcoal basket (sumitori), feather brush for ashes (haboki), a stove (furo) with kettle holder (gotoku) and a kettle (kama). 19th century ivory ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) carved in the round a cluster of 5 rats. Wonderful carving, excellent detailing, eyes of 2 rats are inlaid with pink coral, the eyes of the other 3 with dark horn. Very nice wear and patina, central metal liner, compressed dust on the surface. Height 5/8 inches.

19th century netsuke in manju (rice cake) shape with Shibayama inlays depicting a butterfly, a fly and a beetle. The body is dark beautifully grained wood, materials used for inlay are black horn, ivory, cinnabar, ebony and 2 different kinds of mother of pearl. The inlay is in excellent condition. Plain back, two parts fit nicely, beautiful mellow patina. Diameter 1 13/16 inches.

19th century fine ivory netsuke of a swimming carp with its tail turned to the right and joining the pelvic and pectoral fins for compactness. Excellent rendition of pleasantly thick body, great carving of its scales and face, eyes are inlaid with dark horn. 19th century ivory netsuke of a kneeling laborer grinding tea leaves in a mortar with a flattened disc grinder. Excellent carving - see the portrait quality face with a crooked smile and the muscles of his body. Beautiful even material, wonderful patina. Signed MITSUTOSHI (alternative reading is Koju) on the bottom - the artist is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 498, number 1547). Height 1 1/16 inches.
