Old Chinese scholar’s rock in a shape of dramatic towering snow covered monolith with smaller peaks. Gives wonderful impression of immense energy of the mountain. Very unusual material - it is the core of a walrus tusk. Very strong scholar’s object, beautiful patina on the surface of, fixed in newer rosewood stand. Height with stand 4 inches.

Late Qing Dynasty (1890s to 1911) Chinese scholar’s ivory and ebony brushrest. Ivory is beautifully carved as a prunus trunk with flowers and buds, fixed in superbly fitted and excellently carved ebony stand. Elegant design and color combination, wonderful patina. Excellent functional object for scholar’s desk, one of the most beautiful scholar’s objects that I have had. Height 5/8 inches, total length 6 5/8 inches.

Rather unusual early 19th (can be as early as 18th) century Chinese pewter stacking round box consisting of 2 sections and a cover. Brass inlays of flowers and fruits with branches on the sides, and a boy riding a qilin surrounded by wispy clouds on the top of the cover. Might have been used on scholar’s table for storing small items such as ink cakes. Raised bronze/brass rims, pleasantly heavy, wonderful feel of age to the piece. Height 3 3/4 inches, diameter 4 inches.

19th century Chinese rock crystal seal of square section with finial carved in a shape of a seated dog. Did not photograph well. Beautiful stone with smoky color and inclusions, elegant carving of the animal, fine polish to the surface. Carved on the bottom with four characters, traces of red seal paste in the grooves, imprint of the seal is shown on Enlargement 1. Inscribed on the side. Excellent object for scholar’s table. Height 1 11/16 inches, length 7/8 inches.

Late 19th century Chinese / Tibetan mala - Buddhist rosary consisting of 108 Chinese white/gray jade beads and 4 stained ivory ones that serve as spacers dividing the prayer beads into groups of 27 each. 19th century Chinese pewter covered box for storing small items on scholar’s desk engraved with flowering prunus on the top, and brass trim along ornately shaped rim. Beautifully made, pleasant patina. Stamped on the inside of the cover with maker’s seal in Chinese which reads HUANG YOU. Great patina, wonderful object for scholar’s table. Unusual 19th century Chinese pewter scholar’s box in a shape of a butterfly, whose wings can be lifted to reveal two separate compartments for storing small items such as ink cakes. Very well made, beautifully incised wings of the butterfly, hinges work perfectly, in excellent condition. 19th century 4-sided Chinese scholar’s rock made out of a metamorphic sedimentary stone with characteristic “chrysanthemum” patterns, fitted dark rosewood stand. Shaped as a solitary mountain with weathered surface. Particularly nice dense pattern, very beautiful patina on the surface of the stone from handling. Excellent scholar’s object. Height with stand 6 1/4 inches.
