Set of 6 Chinese jade and hardstone musical instruments, each on a matching rosewood stand. Instruments include a drum made out of jade, qin (zither) made out of jade, gong with striker, trumpet and 2 string instruments, the body of the cello shaped one is jade. Very well made, just one loss in the whole group - that of 1 tuning peg on the cello, otherwise in great condition. Length of the cello 4 inches.

Japanese ivory okimono of smiling Daikoku - one of 7 Gods of Happiness - holding a white rabbit in his hand, and with his foot on a bag of rice. The okimono is a joke on Daikoku’s sanity - he’s got the wrong rodent: rat is the standard companion of Daikoku (who, being the God of Wealth, is associated with rice, and rats thrive when there is abundance of grain). Japanese bronze okimono of a resting wild boar, its head raised and mouth open showing its teeth. Did not photograph well. Extraordinary quality work, superb face with alertly raised snout, sharply modeled hooves, perfectly sculpted coat, inlaid glass eyes with black pupils. Beautiful patina, pleasantly heavy, in perfect condition. Signed with raised characters MITSUMOTO SAKU (made by Mitsumoto) on the bottom. Probably the best piece of metalwork that I have ever had. Length 6 3/8 inches.

Ivory netsuke representing a theatrical mask of Hyottoko - a perplexed peasant - carved by Ryoshu (born in 1912) - one of the best Japanese netsuke carvers of the 20th century (see p. 886 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick). Wonderful expressive face, black and red ink highlights, beautiful finish to the surface. Signed RYOSHU on the back. Height 1 inch.
