Ivory netsuke of of a nio (one of the Buddhist Guardian Kings) ineptly mending a huge old straw sandal with a rope. The subject is a humorous take on a clash between tremendous spiritual power and clumsiness in performing mundane chores. Wonderful carving, great bewildered face with horn inlaid eyes, beautifully incised and etched hair on his limbs, excellent patina, compressed dust on the surface. Ivory netsuke of Rihaku seated on a tree stump and lovingly leaning towards a large wine jar while holding a ladle in his hand. Rihaku (Li Po in Chinese) was a celebrated, probably the most famous poet of China, equally renown for his love of wine. Superbly carved, excellent face and detailing of his hair and robe as well as jar and stump textures. Excellent staining and bleaching, great patina. Superbly carved (see their incised fingernails), wonderfully captured body bulks and dynamic poses, perfectly etched textures of their hair and loincloths. Ivory netsuke of seated Hotei holding a hand drum on his shoulder. Hotei is incarnation of Maitreya - the Buddha of the future - and one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, the fat and happy God of abundance and good health.
