19th century miniature Hirado porcelain sculpture of a reclining karako (Chinese boy) leaning on his right elbow. Excellent crisp modeling with incised details - see his superb dreamy face, well defined hand and clothing details. Beautiful glaze with numerous tiny bubbles, unglazed bottom, original firing crack on the left side of his head that got filled with glaze during firing, very pleasant to the touch. Typical Hirado underglaze blue and brown highlights. Length 1 1/2 inches.

Unusual 19th century Hirado Japanese porcelain brushrest in a shape of a karako (Chinese boy) lying on his stomach with his head and feet raised, his head is moveable. Wonderful modeling with incised details, excellent face, beautiful glaze, unglazed bottom, in great condition (no chips, cracks or repairs), very pleasant to the touch. 19th century ivory netsuke of a squatting chubby baby boy wearing an apron and formal eboshi hat with long tassels that he holds in his hands. The subject is gosho ningyo - ningyo means “human shape”, and "gosho" could be translated as "palace / court" - the latter term referencing the Imperial Palace in Kyoto during the Edo period. Ivory netsuke of a reclining horse, its hooves drawn under its body forming a compact netsuke shape, head turned back as it is neighing vigorously. Wonderful sense of volume, excellent hairwork, great face with amber and horn inlaid eyes. Ivory netsuke of standing Jurojin holding a turtle on his hand. Jurojin is one of 7 Gods of Good Fortune, that of longevity, and the turtle - one of his usual companions - is also associated with longevity. The netsuke is essentially a wish for long life. Very nicely carved, great level of detail and perfectly captured facial expression, expert staining. Pair of early 19th century good size Japanese sword menuki each depicting a riding crop - the one with dark patina with abumi (stirrup), the gilded one with a long tailed bird on a wooden bucket. Superb design, excellent quality work - see the perfectly imitated bamboo texture of the crops, inlaid silver spots on the stirrup and rope texture on bucket. Silvering and gilding, in excellent condition. Length 2 inches.

Pair of 19th century Japanese sword menuki each depicting a samurai with a drawn weapon on a horse swimming among rolling waves. Did not photograph well. The subject is Kagesue and Takatsuna, two famous warriors, competing with each other to cross the Uji river to be the first one to engage the enemy on the opposite side.
