1930s Japanese kimono HAORI fan designs
1930s Japanese formal short silk kimono (haori) with designs showing numerous fans with designs of pine, bamboo and various seals. Excellent quality wax resist work with minute details. The decorated side bearing those designs is actually the lining of the kimono, while the outside is brown silk (see Enlargement 4). This arrangement is the remnant of the Edo period, when the laws against luxury did not allow wealthy merchants to wear sumptuous silks, so they were used on the lining of the garments. This kimono can be worn on either side, both by a man (as a smoking jacket) or a woman, or displayed stretched on a wooden rod. The kimono is in perfect shape. Dimensions: 43 inches high, 52 inches wide (sleeve tip-to-tip).
