| Rather unusual 19th century marine ivory okimono of a huge toad, 2 different species of frogs, a snake and a monkey. Rather unusual grouping, probably illustrates some Japanese proverb or a story: an inscription in irregular reserve on the bottom translates character by character as “value / ten / one / ten thousand”, and is either a reference to the same proverb, or an indication of a high value of the object. Extremely well carved, superb faces and different textures of the creatures. Old age lines, excellent quality black and red ink etching, very beautiful wear and patina consistent with age, pleasantly chunky and heavy. Signed JUZAN in oval reserve on the bottom. Juzan was a go (art name) used by Ishikawa Komei - the artist is listed on p. 661 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Height 2 5/8 inches. | ||
