| Early 19th century decent size boxwood netsuke of a standing fox dressed as Buddhist nun, and leaning on a staff. Foxes in Japanese folklore are generally regarded as unfriendly creatures capable of turning into women and playing cruel tricks on humans. Very strong early piece, wonderfully captured tranquil facial expression, beautiful incised lines of the robe. Large himotoshi (cord holes) typical for the period, beautiful patina, very charming piece. Height 2 5/8 inches (67 mm). | ||
