19th century Chinese Buddhist ruyi scepter made out of rootwood with extraordinary richly textured surface resembling swirling clouds, the head of the scepter perfectly imitating a growth of lingzhi fungus. Ruyi scepter is a traditional symbol of scholarship in Chinese culture, as well as of transmission of knowledge in Buddhist monastery environment. Beautiful lacquer finish worn on raised parts as to be expected, superb warm patina and sheen from generations of people touching it. Extremely pleasing to hold, simple elegant shape, practically no carving, probably the best scholar’s object that I have ever had, extraordinary piece for scholar’s desk or for a practicing Buddhist. Length 9 1/4 inches.
