Rather unusual 19th century Chinese soapstone seal carved on the top with two seated scholar wearing traditional robes, their hands on what appears to be a fisherman’s basket. Excellent carving, beautiful patina and obvious wear attesting to the age of the object. The bottom is carved with four sunken characters in two cartouches and can be translated as HALL FOR CULTIVATION OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, red seal paste in the grooves. The impression of the seal is shown on Enlargement 1. Very nice variegated yellow Shoushan soapstone with rich play of colors. Wonderful object for scholar’s desk. Height 2 1.4 inches, length 3 3/8 inches.
