1930s Japanese scroll painted with ink and colors on silk. The scroll depicts a Sambaso dancer with characteristic hat and fan, and a Saizo dancer playing tsuzumi (a hand drum), all under a rope with ribbons tied to it. Excellent painting capturing the festive mood, wonderful brushwork. Great composition in Japanese taste, the painting is in excellent shape (old tear on the top of the mounts fixed with archival adhesive tape, not noticeable from the front of the painting), rich silk brocade mounts with Fungus of Immortality, bamboo scroll ends. Signed in ink TANSAI, and marked with red paste seal (see detail). Scroll size 79 by 19 inches, painting size 45 by 14 inches.
