Dated 1914 Japanese hanging scroll depicting Zen Buddhism patriarch Daruma enveloped in his monastic robe and wearing a wide rain hat with stupa finial. Two lengthy inscriptions in the upper part of the painting. Ink on silk, fantastic sour face, great composition and sense of volume. Last line on the left dates the painting to August of 1914: the date if followed by inscription “A Few Lines Composed by a Business Gentleman”. First 2 characters in the seal below this inscription can be read as a name ARICHI. There are 3 other red paste seals as well - see Enlargement 6. Silk mounts, wooden scroll ends, some slight foxing throughout the painting. Scroll size 78x21.5 inches, painting size 52x16.5 inches.
