Late 19th century Japanese scroll painting in ink and slight colors on silk depicting various scenes with 16 rakkan - the original disciples of the historical Buddha, some with animals and acolytes. All of the rakkan can be identified by their animals or implements. Excellent brushwork, great faces, beautiful ink washes, very pleasant feel of age. Remounted in paper mounts, lacquered wood scroll ends, some old slight stains to paper. Ink inscription by the artist which can be translated as “Long life of 85 years in a grotto, respectfully and graciously designed by Senkoku” followed by 2 red paste seals.
