19th century boxwood netsuke of Hotei (one of the 7 Gods of Good Luck, also representing Maitreya - the Buddha of the future) standing next to his bag of gifts and holding a fan in his hand. Netsuke imitates hollow ceramic statues of Hotei including their enamel decoration. Wonderful facial expression, beautiful flowing lines of his robe, painted in bright colors with expected wear and losses to the paint, tiny chip to its nose. Signed SHUZAN for Nagamachi Shuzan in irregular reserve on the back - this very distinct artist is listed on p. 1015 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Height 1 5/8 inches.
