Late 18th - early 19th century netsuke of an eagle clutching a struggling dog in its talons. Superb carving to the last detail with absolutely great faces and delineation of different feather textures of the bird. Old age line consistent with the age of the carving, beautiful wear, warm patina (darker on the back where netsuke was touching the silk of kimono). Signed TOMOCHIKA in an irregular shaped reserve on the bottom - the artist is Tomochika the First as discussed on p. 1148 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Fantastic sculpture, all that a great netsuke should be. Height 1 3/8 inches.
