19th century boxwood netsuke of a hatching tengu no tamago pulling its head and wings out of a cracking egg. Tengu are mythological creatures half men, half birds, usually depicted as goblins, and are first-class fighters. Surprisingly enough, the tengy is emerging out of the egg wearing tokin (scull cap worn by warrior monks) on his head. Very good of its face, excellent delineation of the feathers. Pleasant wear, beautiful warm patina. Height 1 5/8 inches.
