19th century netsuke of the Lucky Dream depicting two nasubi (egglants), the larger one with anabori (cavern) carving showing a scene of a walking attendant and poet Narihira on a horse gazing at Mount Fuji while two falcons fly in the distance. Very difficult to photograph the inside, but all of the described above is there. Excellent practical shape for netsuke, great level of detail, beautiful textures of eggplant stems. Old age lines, wonderful patina. Signed MASAHIRO followed by seal HOSAI on the back - this excellent and rare artist is listed on p. 704 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Very similar model with extra small eggplant is illustrated in NETSUKE by Neil Davey, #619. Length 1 15/16 inches.
