19th century netsuke of a kneeling geisha with a huge tengu mask on her back. The netsuke is of shunga type, the nose of the mask being rather suggestive. Excellent crisp carving with great facial expression and beautiful lines of her kimono, beautifully incised textile patterns. Wonderful grotesque mask, its eyes are inlaid with black horn. Unusual polychrome decoration rarely done on high quality netsuke of that type, great wear and patina. Signed MASACHIKA in irregular reserve on the bottom - for information on this rare Tomochika school artist see NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick, p. 700. Height 1 7/16 inches.
