Late Meiji - early Taisho netsuke of seated Ebisu holding a sea brim in his hands. Ebisu is one of the 7 Gods of Good Fortune - that of fishing, which is particularly important in Japan. Very nicely carved, great smiling face, black ink highlights, beautifully depicted textile patterns, pleasant patina. Signed GYOKUZAN on the bottom - for information on the artist see NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick, p. 433. Height 1 11/16 inches.
