19th century Osaka netsuke of a seated chubby puppy trying to figure out what is happening as a butterfly lands on the top of its neck. Strong piece with great facial expression and wonderful fur texture. Pleasantly chunky, the tail curving up at the back, the large eyes inlaid in dark horn, old age lines, wonderful wear and patina. Signed RAKU in irregular shaped reserve on its hind leg - for information on this rare artist who may be identical with Risuke Garaku see p. 858 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Excellent netsuke, very similar to the one from the collection of Francois Storno. Height 1 3/8 inches.
