Mid - 19th century Chinese official hat finial with clear glass bead denoting 5th civil rank. This type of rank insignia was introduced by the Yongzheng emperor in 1727 for use on ji guan - the semi-formal hat. Different colors denoted different ranks, with clear corresponding to the 5th - see IMPERIAL WARDROBE by Dickinson & Wrigglesworth, p. 108. Beautiful Peking glass bead, gilded filigree metal parts depicting piles of jewels. Two Chinese characters made by punched dots on the bottom. Height 1 15/16 inches.
