19th century boar’s tusk netsuke engraved with temple buildings among trees. I believe it depicts the Ishiyama Temple of the Shingon Buddhist sect in Ōtsu (Shiga Prefecture), the thirteenth temple of the Kansai Kannon Pilgrimage, and the one where Lady Murasaki began writing The Tale of Genji on a full moon night in August 1004. Superb engraving, beautifully etched, wonderful wear and patina, old age lines. Central hole for a peg used for hanging the netsuke. The use of boar’s tusk and quality of work strongly suggest that it was carved by an Iwami school carver. Width 4 1/4 2 inches (110 mm)
