19th century solid lacquer netsuke of standing Kannon - the Boddhisattva of Compassion - holding a basket in front of her. Very unusual material - it is carved out of a block of lacquer formed of different color layers as the leftover liquid lacquer was discarded by a lacquer artist, and then solidified. Very clever use of material with red and yellow lacquer layers made visible by carving it, some black layers on the back, wonderful face beautiful flow to the folds of her robe, beautiful finish and patina. Signed CHIKUZAN on the bottom - the artist is listed on p. 334 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Former in the collection of Raymond Bushell. Height 2 3/8 inches.
