18th century stag antler netsuke of shinkiro (the dream of a shell) - the mirage of Dragon King Ryujin’s palace appearing on swirling vapors in the breath of a clam shell. Extraordinary strong early carving (probably first half of 18th century), bold design, pleasantly massive, great sense of volume. Beautifully carved and stained, superb wear and patina, himotoshi is formed by openings in the rising vapors. For almost identical example see Barry Davies’ NETSUKE FROM THE TEDDY HAHN COLLECTION, p. 111, #154. The strongest early netsuke that I have had. Height 2 3/16 inches (55 mm).
