19th century Chinese scholar’s covered box of elongated oval section decorated on the outside with engraved design of Baxian - the Eight Taoist Immortals with their implements. The top has medium relief decoration of branches with flowers, buds and leaves.. The material of the box is paktong - an alloy made of copper, nickel and zinc extensively used in China for export objects in the 18th and 19th centuries. The collar of the box is brass. Wonderful quality engraving, very pleasant patina, top and bottom still fit tightly. The box must have been used for small scholar’s items, very nice and unusual object. Length 3 5/16 inches, height 2 7/8 inches, width 1 5/8 inches.
