Late 19th century okomono style netsuke of Benkei enjoying a drink of sake from a sizable cup as he sits in a dragon boat while an oni is punting with a bamboo pole. Very unusual, possibly unique subject, superb detailed carving, perfectly captured dynamic posture of the oni with its muscular limbs, excellent depiction of their clothes and dragon style decoration on the outside of the boat. Beautifully carved himotoshi, very pleasant patina, compressed dust on the surface. Signed SEIZAN on the bottom - the artist is listed on p. 928 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Length 3 1/4 inches.
