19th century Asakusa school staghorn ojime (slide bead for tightening the cord going from netsuke to inro) in pillow shape etched in ink on the front with a stylized water dragon. The back bears etched signature KOKU for Ozaki Kokusai in seal form - the signature appears a bit weak, but I believe it to be original. Clever design, wonderful example of etching technique for which the carver was known. The founder of Asakusa school of netsuke carving is listed on p. 648 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Warm yellowish patina, darker porous areas as is usual with staghorn, which, in fact, make it so attractive. Height 11/16 inches
