Rather unusual late 18th century netsuke in a shape of a partially unrolled scroll depicting Kanzan unrolling his own scroll under a pine tree. According to a legend, Kanzan and his friend Jittoku lived in a kitchen of a Chinese Zen Buddhist monastery and talked nonsensical language, which some took as a sign of them being enlightened. The back shows mounts bent back and a bouquet of flowers with leaves, stems serving as himotoshi. Superbly clever design, excellent face and robe lines, beautiful stippling of the background, scroll ends are inlaid with ebony, wonderful wear and patina turning yellow from wear, old age lines, strong early piece. Height 2 1/4 inches.
