Used hardcover book NETSUKE: FANTASY AND REALITY IN JAPANESE MINIATURE SCULPTURE by Joe Earle. The book was published in 2004 by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston to accompany an exhibition in the museum. Probably the best public exhibition of netsuke in the last 30 years - each piece is of superb quality, none is mediocre. Drawn from the holdings of the Museum and private collections. Superbly illustrated volume examines netsuke in the context of Japanese life and details the origins of designs that have evolved through the centuries. It delves into the minds of the artists and explores the question of the objects' functional and symbolic use. Hardcover, 356 pages, 300 color plates, signatures of all the exhibited pieces, numerous color text figures, includes bibliography, glossary, index and appendix of Japanese titles & artists' names. Some tears to the dust jacket fixed with adhesive tape on the inside, tiny bit of staining on the lower edge of the book, overall in great usable condition. Excellent reference book. Size 9.75 x 8.5 x 1.25 inches, weight 3 pounds 11 ounces.
