19th century netsuke of slightly flattened ball shape carved in the round with 4 quatrefoil reserves depiction landscapes with buildings under pine trees, and hollowed inside of the ball. Top and bottom are carved with dense brocade pattern, and the centers with rich chrysanthemum design. Top chrysanthemum is in fact a cover allowing for the piece to function as netsuke: the cord goes through the central hole in the lower roundel, through 2 holes in the stem of the cover and back out through the center of the lower roundel. Beautiful crisp carving, expert staining, wonderful patina, in excellent condition. Diameter 1 5/16 inches.
