Absolutely essential reference book with thorough descriptions and black and white photos of 1322 netsuke with some 300 actual signatures, two pages of color photographs. Most valuable part is an index of 3425 known netsuke artists with their names in Japanese characters, type of work, time period and preferred medium. The study of the collection itself includes division into carving schools, followed by unsigned netsuke. Includes subject index, glossary of Japanese terms, bibliographical abbreviations, index of known artists and prices that pieces realized in a series of Sotheby’s sales between 1967 and 1969. | ||
