$1295

A delightful bronze okimono / sculpture of a pair of rats on a rock by Japanese artist Shinya Nakamura. The two rats appear to ascend the rock until they can go no further. Superb realism in the rodents and the rock, stuck in animation. Nakamura was born in 1926 in Mie Prefecture in Japan. He attended the Tokyo school of Fine Arts. In the 1960's he travelled to Spain to study under the Spanish sculptor Apel les Fenosa. His work is to be found in the Vatican and many other museums throughout Japan. Nakamura is considered to be one of Japan's leading contemporary sculptors of figurative art. This sculpture comes complete with its original signed paulownia storage case. Dimensions:10" x 6" (25cm x 15cm).

SOLD

All the splendour of a russet cast iron sweets dish in the shape of a hanging gourd. Stylized tendrils in high relief cascade down the rough mottled surface. A single solid silver inlaid paulownia leaf raises the status of this simple organic form to one befitting the refinement of the tea ceremony. The generous hour glass contours of the gourd are repeated in the feet which are miniature versions of the same form. The upper part of the gourd is softly curved and cleverly acts as a handle and allows the host of the tea ceremony to offer sweets to the guests with the imperial paulownia leaf in its correct orientation. Dimensions: 9" x 6" (23cm x 15.5cm) S+H is included in the price.
