A beautiful and striking Japanese samurai face mask hanbo in Tsubame Bo (swallow tail) style and dating to the early or mid-Edo period (1615-1868) or earlier. Superb early thick brown matt lacquer finish over a hand hammered and worked shape. The interior of the mask is coated with smooth cinnabar red lacquer. From the bottom of the chin section is suspended a four lame iron Yodarekake or neck guard, which is secured in place by heavy cord lacing. A four stage lame is rare on hanbo which usually have three. The Sugake Odoshi lacing is in Moegi green and orange silk cord. On either side of the cheeks are Odome pegs or cord fastening posts for securing the helmet cords. There is an Asa-Nagashi-No-Ana hole in the underside of the chin to allow perspiration to drain away during the heat of battle. Overall condition is good with some loss of lacquer and hairlines on the surface. This is an extensively used item and bears the scars of battle. A rare opportunity to purchase a superb example of the the most intimate armor worn by a samurai. Dimensions: Face: 8 1/2" x 7 1/2" x 3 1/2".

An impressive rare Japanese boy Ichimatsu ningyo or doll that sits dating to the late Taisho era (1912-1926). Boy ichimatsu dolls are rare but ones that bend at the waist and sit are even more difficult to find. This is a very high quality doll made by a master craftsman whose stamp is featured on a sheet of paper covering the abdomen (under his clothing). His expression is radiant with a superb white gofun face ( the application of many layers of crushed oyster shell) with glass eyes. His hair is fine silk and fashioned in a period hairstyle. His haori (over-garment is hand embroidered with gold stitching.Both hakama and haori still contain basting stitches which shows the doll has been well kept. The overall the quality of workmanship is extremely high and this is a doll worthy of the best collections.Dimensions: 15"(standing) x 10" x 5". Overall condition is very good for age. An important addition to any collection of Japanese dolls.

A superb high quality Kyoto ichimatsu ningyo or friendship doll from the late 1920's - early 1930's. The doll was made by a famous Kyoto doll maker whose seal can be found attached to the base (see detail picture). Her expression is beautiful and subtle. Her face is gofun (many layers of crushed oyster shell) with glass eyes and real human hair. The doll was hardly ever displayed because the hands and legs are covered in the original brown paper covering! The doll's kimono is fine silk with hand-embroidered cherry blossoms. Overall the quality of workmanship is extremely high and this is a doll worthy of the best collections. Dimensions: 17" x 10" x 6". Overall condition is very good for age. An important addition to any collection of Japanese dolls.

A beautiful high quality Kyoto doll or ningyo depicting a dancing girl in its own case, dating to the late Meiji period (1868-1912). The girl is most likely a performer at the Miyako Odori in Kyoto, where the doll was purchased. A type of Isho Ningyo, the quality of workmanship is extremely high. Only the very best dolls have teeth and this doll is no exception. Also the artist has used his all of his skill to make the doll stand on one leg - the dancer's left leg is actually about 1/8" off the base! The doll's face and hands are fine white gofun ( many layers of applied crushed oyster shell) with glass eyes. The doll has silk hair and the costume is fine chirimen silk with exquisite hand embroidered gold thread (see detail). Dimensions: 14" x 5 1/2" x 5". Overall condition is very good for age with original case. An important addition to any collection of Japanese dolls.

A rare boxed and signed Japanese wooden doll depicting a noh performer. The doll has been hand carved from a single piece of semi-hardwood and hand painted. The reverse of the sliding lid bears the signature of the artist "Haku Ho" and is dated Showa 17 (1942). The same signature is carved on the reverse of the doll base (see pictures). The female noh performer, complete with mask is adorned with a period kimono with exquisite hand painted flowers. Of the many types of Japanese ningyo, this is the first all wood doll we have listed. Dimensions: 11" x 4 1/2" x 3 1/2' Overall condition is very good for age with original case and covering cloth. An important addition to any collection of Japanese dolls.

A superb tea ceremony 'Taikai' chaire or tea caddy, complete with its shifuku or silk storage bag, dating to the early 20th or earlier. This Taikai cha-ire is of the low squat type with a round shoulder (It is slightly larger than the Chukai chaire). A rich honey chocolate glaze with umber accents dance around the body of this Seto chaire. The heavy ivory lid is gold lined and exhibits a slight yellowing through age. The foot is unglazed with the base featuring the typical string-cut pattern, dark through years of use. Overall condition is excellent for age with the shifuku showing some light stress. Dimensions: 2 1/4" x 3 1/2". An excellent addition to any serious collection of teaware or for use by the tea practitioner.
