Japanese Samurai Sword Tsuba, Iwamoto Ikkan
An excellent signed tsuba for a Japanese Samurai Sword dating to the Edo period (1615-868). This magnificent iron tsuba featuring dragonflies or 'tombo' was created by artist "IWAMOTO IKKAN" (1837 - 1867). Iwamoto was an Edo (tokyo) based artist and considered the eighth master in the famous Iwamoto line. His mei (signature) can be seen on the seppa dai and has been verified as authentic by a leading expert. The theme of dragonflies is very rare and this tsuba displays an extremely high state of craftsmanship. The front features three high relief dragonfly in various positions. The detail on the wings and legs is breathtaking. The reverse features a further two dragonfly in flight. Amazing and intricate use of gold on the eyes and legs. tantalizing background textured 'crater' detail. There is evidence of sekigane in the nanago-ana as this tsuba was once mounted. Dimensions: 8cm x 7.3cm x 0.5cm. An excellent piece of late Edo period tsuba art for the serious collector. Storage case is recent addition.
