Antique Samurai Armor Helmet Jingasa, Edo
A rare antique Japanese samurai soldier's helmet or Jingasa dating to the Edo period (1615-1868). The front section features the 'mon' or family crest of the Shimazu clan from Kyushu. The famous mon is in the shape of a cross inside a circle because the Shimazu clan were Christians by faith and ruled Kyushu for almost 700 years. This jingasa still has the original cotton chin straps and head cushion. Construction is of wood, hide and thick lacquer to give a highly flexible and solid defense against arrows etc. Exterior lacquer is a rich burnt umber in color with gold mon and circles (now tarnished) with a deep red interior. Overall condition is very good with expected loss of lacquer on the rim and on the dome section (shown). Dimensions: 17" diameter x 4" in height. A wonderful item for display in a collection of samurai armor items.
