Antique Japanese Samurai Kabuto Helmet Maedate 18thC
A superb antique Japanese Edo period (18thC) samurai maedate / maetate or crest for a kabuto helmet. Hand crafted and constructed of brass and now exhibiting a rich dark inviting patina. The pattern is called "Meyui" and is a set of stylized 'eyes' bound by a circle. This is a popular crest or mon that was worn by samurai working for the Shogun. Clans famous for using this crest include Satou, Tanaka and Yamada This item is not a replica and a period piece. This crest is heavy and there is an attachment on the obverse for attachment to the oharadaite or crest holder. Maedate with such dark patina are rare and highly sought after to complete period yoroi displays. Dimensions: 11.5cm in diameter.
