Pair of Japanese four–panel screens from the Tosa School, depicting court life during the Heian period, scene is taken from the book "Tales of Genji”, written by Lady Murasaki during the Heian period (794-1192), finely detailed outdoor scene with male and female figures wearing elaborate clothing of the period, with highly embossed gold-leaf clouds throughout. These screens are from the Genroku period (1688-1704), which is the Golden Age of the Edo period (1603-1868). The cloth borders are embroidered and enclosed in a black wood frame. They are painted with colored pigments and gold-leafed cloud motif. The condition show signs of age throughout, but in good condition. Provenance: Mr. Toranosuke Shioyama, collector, deceased in 1958, Seiichi Kirihara, collector’s possession until 1964. They were presumably presented by the Tokugawa shogunate to a court noble. Size: 24” x 84” wide.

This beautiful byobu screen is featuring a scene from the famous 11th century novel by Lady Murasaki. It is a continuous scene of a landscape setting with male and female figures in various pavilions engaged in conversation or practicing the arts, with a daimyo dressed in his elaborate regalia riding a black horse with a red saddle blanket, with his retainers in the foreground, a layer of gilt clouds meander throughout the landscape, ink, colors and gilt on paper.
