The artist has used strong bold forms for the hillside on the right-side which are juxtaposed with the movement and lightness of the waves, a golden glow in the sky which highlights the waves. James Arthur Merriam (1880-1951) was born in Canada, moved to Detroit in 1920, and later relocated to Los Angeles. Merriam was known for his desert landscapes and mission paintings so this seascape is more unusual. The frame is of the period and is exceptional. Title: Untitled Seascape Date: 1925 Media: Oil on Canvas - Size: 21" x 29" (w/frame 31' x 38 1/2") (78.7 x 97.8 cm)
