This exceptional Japanese carved wood statue of the Bodhisattva Maitreya. Maitreya is the only celestial Bodhisattva recognized by the sects of the Theravada school. The Bodhisattva with downcast eyes and elongated ears is standing wearing a closely fitted robe draped over one shoulder, his hair is in a chignon with a small stupa, a low crown surrounds his head, and his right hand is holding a vase. The vase moves around. The hand was carved around the vase. There are traces of white pigment, and slight traces of brownish pigment. The base of the statue is attached to two wooden pins that fit into a finely grained wood double lotus base. The statue and base are carved out of either sandalwood or camphorwood. It is 25” high.
