|A rare and sophisticated Maple and Bird's-Eye-Maple chest of drawers with Yellow Poplar secondary wood, with a magnificent salmon colored marble top placed over a Bird's -Eye- Maple top and with an original bevelled glass adjustable mirror within a matching structure, in excellent original condition including the finish, (the silvering of the mirror shows minor deterioration consistent with its age), 79" H. X 49" W. X 22-1/2" D., 30" H. at the marble top, circa 1890. Attributed to R. J. Horner, by comparison to two related examples, one in the High Museum of Atlanta, Georgia (see pg. 230 in "Art and Enterprise" by Donald Pierce, publ. 1999) and one in the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica, New York (see plate #52, in "Masterpieces of American Furniture, from the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute", publ. 1999). For centuries the Chinese had produced wooden furniture turned and carved in imitation of bamboo. In the USA it became very popular in the 1880's in part because of the Japanese display of natural bamboo furniture at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Advertisements in the New York Times show that R.J. Horner & Co. had a retail furniture store at 61-65 East 23rd St., N.Y.C. in 1886 with a manufacturing operation in the 5th floor loft in the same building. Horner became very successful and well known for this style of furniture as well as later styles of furniture. Records indicate that he was in business under his own name until 1915 when he merged with George C. Flint and Company. The light and airy design of this piece makes it just as suitable in a casual contemporary setting today as in a 19th Century period room. The large chest portion has plenty of storage space and the large mirror reflects light and creates the illusion of space in a room.
