This was a popular mid 19th century medium used by amateur painters, often young women who were inspired by the well known painters of the day. This scene is a highly romantic fantasy typical of early Hudson River School Paintings and like many Sandpaper Paintings this is an actual location along the Hudson River, however romanticized.
